Rigol DSA815-TG-EMI
5.0
Have had the DSA815 for about a year and it has been flawless in operation. It has a very solid build feel... Have compared this unit side by side against my "day job" expensive HP unit and results were similar. Have used this unit for a lot of pre-compliance testing for AC line conducted EMI/RFI. The limit line (pass/fail) features work well, it takes a while to figure out how to enter the pass fail limits but you only need to do it once. Overall, a nice unit.

Best Customer Service
5.0
I purchased this Rigol DSA815-TG spectrum analyzer and have had time to work with it. So far, I am very pleased with its performance. The unit’s packing was sealed from the factory and was still within its calibration window (calibrated September, 2020).
I had one issue when the analyzer was purchased and brought that issue to the attention of Ms. Latoya in the customer service department. This woman was wonderful; she listened to my concern and would not stop until the issue was resolved. I thank Mr. Brian Moran for following through on his promise and I’ll continue to purchase my test equipment only from TEquipment.net.

Amazing instrument for the price!!! - Great remote control capablity
5.0
Owned and used Tek/HP/R&S instruments over the years, this one is the most feature packed for the money by miles. In particular, the SCPI commands over IP make it amazing, the Programming Manual from Rigol is good, but there is one command not in the manual to capture the screen that is fantastic.
The SCPI command ":PRIV:SNAP? BMP" fetches a screen grab from the Instrument - In Linux, this command would send the SCPI command to the Instrument, get the response back, stripping the first 11 bytes off, leaving a bitmap image of the capture - change the IP 192.168.88.64 to your instrument's IP in the Linux command:
echo ":PRIV:SNAP? BMP" | nc -w3 192.168.88.64 5555 | dd bs=1 skip=11 of=image.bmp

DSA815-TG

I just purchased the Rigol DSA815-TG spectrum analyzer from TEquipment and I am extremely pleased with it's performance. I am using it as a instrument to test experimental circuitry in my ham shack lab. I have put it through a number of bench tests already and find it simple to use and very accurate. Already, I have used it to measure antenna VSWR, various RF filter tests to learn the SA features. I compared the VSWR measurements to the MFJ 269 analyzer and they both agreed. I am extremely pleased. The service for TEquipment was excellent and prompt. Thank you.

Outstanding Spectrum Analyzer
5.0
I recently purchased a DSA815-TG and I have to say that this is one outstanding analyzer, I'm like a kid in a candy store. I've been involved in radio communications for 38 years and always wanted to have my own spectrum analyzer in the ham shack, not borrowed. If you need to tune up a set of base station, or mobile duplexers, check out filters of various sorts, analyze antennas, locate and document sources of radio interference, work of identifying and repairing radio gear defects, this analyzer is a winner. I also was impressed that the analyzer came with a 3 year warranty (outstanding) for the money. The analyzer serves as a great maintenance tool for maintaining the several repeaters I own and a shack of other communications gear. The analyzers is well constructed and feature packed and simple to understand and operate, and if you need to perform maintenance at a remote site, you won't be subjected to a hernia during transport. This is not a toy, it's a professional piece of test gear for both the professional technician and amateur radio enthusiast.
I do I have one constructive criticism, this analyzer is designed with portability in mind, I would highly recommend that it include a hard protective molded front cover to protect screen, menu keys, and dial to prevent damage during transport, at the very least, offer it as an option.

4.0
Nice unit easy to set up and understand. Excellent for student education and introduction to spectrum analyzer. Built in TG permits understanding of transfer functions of real RF components and operation as a scalar network analyzer with a directional coupler is much less costly than buying a network analyzer. Excellent value for the money. Wish the RF input level would go to 30 dBm but easy to solve with an external pad.

I was skeptical when I purchased this product. I put it thru its paces connecting with my signal generator to check its accuracy. I was surprised to see them match each other! Even the signal levels matched! I have already tuned one set of duplexers and checks so many other things with it. Its nice to have equipment that you can count on. I work around high dollar equipment where I work and this analyzer seems to work just as good as top dollar stuff. I hope it keeps working just as it does now. I have only owned it for a couple weeks now.

I just upgraded my DSA815-TG by purchasing the VSWR kit and the Advanced Math Software/Key. I am a hobbyist and also an Amateur Radio Operator and these new features are working out very well for me. The VSWR kit is great for evaluating antennas and it is nice to be able to sweep a large frequency range to define the response characteristics of an antenna or filter. Using the Advanced Math functions also really speeds up the analysis and documentation of the DUT. I highly recommend this Analyzer and the additional options. A must have is the tracking generator, so be sure you order the proper DSA815 with the TG.

This compact Spectrum analyzer is one of the easiest spectrum analyzers to use. I use it almost daily to check filter widths, crystals, and radio IFs. Very hard to beat for the price. Make sure to get the tracking generator with it as it was designed to be very flat in output over the entire spectrum. There are three or four options for it, but they are not needed as everything you want to do can be done external to the analyzer (SWR).

Gives better filtering for doing pre-EMI testing. EMI-DSA800 - Performance Enhancement at a price
4.0
Adding this accessory to the DSA 815-TG unleashes the power the hardware already possesses. The enabling of the EMI filter and the increased Resolution Bandwidths makes for more accurate measurements at low signal levels. For the price point of this product the performance level is satisfactory.
The Rigol marketing strategy is to mask these features till additional $$$ are paid for the accessory to be software-enabled. So, when one is comparison-performance-shopping for spectrum analyzers, these additional costs need to be factored in.

The construction is excellent, and have watched EEVBlogs teardown of this unit. It is not a $10,000 plus unit, but it does everything I need it do. I did look at used Agilent unit but for the cost this was a better option for me. For a home spectrum at this cost it is awesome. Waited a long time before ordering. Worth the wait. Great price, quick delivery, and a great product. Having been in communications work for over 30 years I have used many different analyzers. Yes there are better specs out there but when it came to outfitting my personal shop I had to make a best selection from my budget. I have been using this to sweep test my RF cables, antennas and filters that I had some idea of but now know for sure. Speed and accuracy on a budget. ARRL reviews and other reviewers elsewhere were accurate. All this plus a 3 year warranty. I have still many more plans but having had this only 3 days (at the time of this review) I still have much more investigation into applications to do. Be sure to get the tracking generator to boot. Hope this helps.

A well priced technological workhorse.
5.0
If you’re like me, you read reviews and study specifications, and then wait. Well. stop waiting. If you can afford a more expensive model, get it. For example it might be nice to have a faster sweep speed at the lower RBW’s. But if this one fits your budget, pull the trigger. This model has an excellent feature suite at the price point. Plus, you’re not getting any younger, and the time to learn new things is now. I say that, because like so much of my test equipment, I have learned a great deal from using this unit. It’s an excellent device to reveal principals of electronics. And think of it – you can see every signal from 9 Khz to 1.5 Ghz. It is feature-rich and intuitive (for the most part). The manual is thick but a bit sketchy in some areas, such as using the demodulator, and normalizing the tracking generator. But those are hardly cons to purchasing. I’ve used mine to sweep coax, check noise figure of preamplifiers – and it was an eye opener on a 6 meter preamp that was a better comb generator than preamp…, find A clear frequency for our church’s new wireless mic system, and more, in just the month or so it’s been on my bench. A well priced technological workhorse.

Best bang for the buck, BUT............,
4.0
There is no free ride. The low price has it's downfalls. Of course how this affects you is dependent on your background, experience with Spectrum Analyzers and application.
If this is your first SA, it's more than adequate. If you are using it for OTA (over the air) monitoring as in broadcast and/or 2-way communication, it might not be. If you are coming from a HP, Agilent or similar, it surely won't be.
Review updated 5/15:
I have had experience with a number of scopes under $10k and while this is surely a good deal, the major 'beef' is the slow "update rate"of the display of the sweep. This is NOT the refresh rate, but the rate data is sent to the screen. It took me some time to get the correct terminology for this from more than one manufacture. Many didn't know what I was talking about.
Rigol did to their credit and was able to supply specs which no one else could. I talked with Rigol regarding this problem with both of these scopes and was told the "update rate" is only 5Hz with the 815 & the 1030 series. The new model; DSA832 rate is substantially faster; 25Hz. But, that and other improvements comes at a price; $8700 for the model with a TG and preamp.
Two related problems which are not limited to just this model or brand; reported sweep speeds:
1. The figure shown is not correct. The actual speed is slower. Example: 100ms is actually closer to 150ms. 750ms is actually 1,000ms (one second). This is not the only SA that I have seen inaccurate speeds reported. Some will report different rates under the same settings.
2. Dropping below 100ms will rarely display a faster updated trace. The 'choppiness' will be there. The same applies to the older 1030 series. While you can manually dial down to 20ms, it will not show any difference. In other words, while the actually sweep is faster, you won't visually see it. At least you are able to change the sweep speed up or down, Instek's scopes you can only increase the time..
Pros;
1. Price (what else can one say),
2. Size & weight,
3. Decent color display,
4. Decent US support in English, unlike Instek (seems rare these days),
5. Tracking generator is close to free ($200 option). I've seen many TG's add $2k to the price. You would be a fool not to equip it this way,
6. Preamp included. You do get a warning 'beep' when the input is at the overload level,
7. Perfect entry level SA, especially for hobbyists.
Cons;
1. Overload input is 10db/m less than most others; 20dBm vs 30dBm
2. Inability to update the display to show sweeps faster than 100ms (depending on other settings) due to 5Hz update rate.
4. You can only save screen shots to a USB stick, not to internal memory like Instek's,
5. No white screen option for the screen saves, you have to use PC software to invert colors if you wish to print the results to save ink,
6. You are forced to name the screen saves with a confusing text entry setup that includes Chinese symbols. You have to keep switching back and forth between letters and numbers since you can't use the number keypad unlike Instek,
7. Overall specs are in a lower tier class (as expected at this price). Noise floor and phase noise specifically.
8. No optional battery operation.
9. No 'jog' dial and it's small. Only up & down navigation buttons.
10. The 'feet' that fold out to tilt the unit up have a tendency to collapse when you lift the scope from the bench. Instek's system is far better.

Great Features for a GREAT Price
5.0
I bought the DSA815-TG for broadcast and personal use. I have to say, I was very much surprised by the quality and features that this spectrum analyzer has. It's amazing how many features it has for its price point. I have done a number of occupied bandwidth measurements and it is dead on accurate! I love being able to save screenshots and data to a USB drive. The unit's small size makes it easy to travel with. I would recommend this Rigol DSA815-TG to anyone looking for an affordable, accurate spectrum analyzer.

Excellent for SSB
5.0
I have used this unit extensively to evaluate SSB signals as influenced by linearity correction schemes from 1.8MHz to 432MHz. The ability to simply type in the exact sweep desired, get the expected trace, and be able to store and/or print it on a PC is enormously useful. And the tracking generator is great for evaluation of filters. Very satisfied with both the performance and value.

After a quick review on setting up the internal calibration ran through several filters, found one with an internal error that hadn't shown up. Tweaked a couple of Class E amplifiers at HF. Put an antenna on it and from the car found a power line source that I could have found with an RF detector, but was made easy with this light, portable unit.

I have purchased this analyser about 1 year before. I am very satified. I have others spectrum analysers: HP8592A, HP8591A, NEX NS-30 and ADVANTEST R3131.
Positive notes: a lot of measurement functions available; large color LCD; robust firmware (never crashed); easy graphical interface; really portable and lightweight; precision of measurements.
Negative notes: low sensibility compared to others models. The average noise for full span with 0 dB attenuation is -62dBm. For 1MHZ span is -87dBm; rubber keyboard.

DSA815-TG
5.0
I have been using HP/Agilent spectrum and network analyzers for at least 35 years. I still have an old 141 series and HP8591 for home use but, after picking up a Rigol DS1054Z and reading positive comments on the DSA815. I decided to give one a try.
I must say, I'm very impressed with the quality and performance of the 815. To use the old "bang for the buck" phrase is an understatement.
This is coming from a test equipment snob who tried some of the other inexpensive offerings over the years and was not too impressed.
Now having used the 1054z and the 815, my impression is that Rigol has earned a place in the area of quality test equipment.
The down side is that now I have my eyes on an arbitrary waveform generator and lab power supply.
Good job Rigol.

Spent the weekend taking the new DSA815-TG for a test drive. I've wanted / needed a good quality SA for years, and was tired on borrowing others. Brand new for less $$ than most used gear, and no risk of blowing a disk out hefting one of the old boat anchors around. To see what this unit will do, search You Tube. Affordable tool for a hobbyist or radio amateur
5.0
I was debating buying this analyzer or an old Tek/Agilent from Ebay. But since I never owned SA before, I decided to get one that was guaranteed to work. The 1.5GHz limit seems low, but I mostly work in sub-Ghz region.
First impression, it boots fast, under around 30 seconds. Shutdown is instant. Fan noise is audible, but pleasant (yes, really). It sounds like air flowing, not buzzing. And I am a silent PC nut. Buttons feel nice, knob is solid. The screen is bright and sharp with good contrast. It has matte anti glare finish. The user interface is responsive, but marker panning can be slow sometimes. I use Up/Down buttons under knob for rough marker jumps and the knob for fine tuning. Sweep speed is much slower than analog analyzers, but for viewing fast digital signals hold peaks mode and a bit of time works. I think the fastest sweep time i got was 10 - 15 per second. My old Anritsu analog SA does 100.
The best feature for me is Normalize function in tracking generator. This way I can connect directional coupler and zero out it's non-linearity/loss, for example. But when I change frequency span, it resets and I have to re-normalize. Annoying but doable.
So far, I have frequency swept bandpass filters, circulators, verified frequency flatness of power spliters, attenuators and RF relays. I tested my old amplifier circuit I've built and discovered it had horrible input return loss, but so much gain that it kept working. Amplifier frequency response sweeping is fun. I ordered Mini Circuits 1W flat response linear amp to boost TG signal for driving more powerful amplifiers. The tracking generator outputs from 0 to -20 dBm level. With flat log periodic antenna I can sweep frequency response of various antennas I build, along with return loss. Trace freezing allows me to keep one measurement on screen wile capturing another. Its useful when comparing antenna front/back gain, or polarization loss.
The tracking generator can be used as fixed frequency generator in zero span mode. But it's spectrum in not totally pure, with -40dBc harmonics. Frequency response is flat down to 200kHz or so. I also found that adding 6dB attenuator to TG output improved linearity readings of various devices under test, something to keep in mind when getting contradictory measurement results.
I have not found any bugs or design flaws yet. The marker features could be more polished, but there wasn't a case where I could not find a workaround.
In conclusion, this is a godsend to a radio amateur or serious hobbyist. The fact that you don't often see these selling as used on Ebay is a good clue. People want to keep them. I plan to keep mine until I am rich enough to buy a full blown VNA...

Fantasic RF Analyzer
5.0
I have worked as a radio broadcast engineer for over 30 years and never owned a spectrum analyzer until now. This is one amazing piece of test equipment! I'm very impressed with the quality and accuracy. I am still learning about everything it can do. So far I have used it to look at the FM broadcast band in many locations and to look at signals from 944-952 MHz STL receive dishes. The measurements are very accurate and the front end with RF preamp is very sensitive. Sweeping the FM band, I can see very weak signals barely above the 2uV noise floor. With the RBW and VBW set very narrow, it easily displays weak 1st adjacent signals next to very strong signals that are 70dB higher. I plan on trying some AM station NRSC bandwidth measurements when I can get a proper loop antenna. The tracking generator works great. I swept several bandpass filters and a notch filter and the measurements matched the manufacturer specs. I ordered a Mini-Circuits 0.1 to 2000 MHz directional coupler for checking return loss on antennas and loads. I might buy the Rigol bridge and VSWR software option if the Mini-Circuits coupler doesn't do the job. I also checked out and tuned a couple Marti RPU transmitters and it worked great. It's handy for looking at oscillator frequencies and levels. I would recommend this S.A. to any radio broadcast engineer. It can be used to analyze everything from AM RF up to 950 MHz STL signals. I am very happy with this purchase.

Wonderful instrument
5.0
The DSA815-TG is a great value for any user who needs to measure and characterize rf equipment for general uses. Out of the box the instrument performed beautifully, matching a high-end Motorola service monitor to within 7 Hz at 150 MHz for frequency accuracy and within .5db for amplitude from -70dbm to -20dbm.
The TG function can be used at zero span as a fixed signal source and, with an external attenuator, can become a precise low level signal for receiver testing.
The ability to document measurement results by capturing the screen to a file on a USB memory stick makes for easy record keeping on systems.

I'll admit , I don't use it every day, but the DSA815TG does almost all that I require it to do. I have repeater setup for Amateur Radio in the residence. Maintenance, using this device makes it a breeze. Take for example the verification of the antenna duplexer. There are no external signal sources needed, since it has a built in tracking generator. In no time you see exactly, the filter / notch curve in a graphical display. Tune the pass band verify the notch and viola. Because it is light weight I can take it wherever I want to take it. If you want to measure return loss, it gets a little more expensive, since you'll need a return loss bridge. With the bridge, you can even tune antennas. I got it at an unbelievable price, an investment well worth it.

DSA815-TG Spectrum Analyzer
5.0
This is a nice machine for the money. It is good for all but the more exacting measurements, when you are worried about 1 dB or a few cycles. For what I do it is great and is versital. A good value.

Very nice spectrum analyzer
5.0
This is an extremely nice spectrum analyzer for the money. The interface is very intuitive. From the time I took it out of the box, to the time I was analyzing filter responses was about 10 minutes. This is a perfect tool for field work.

Very impressed by this piece of equipment
4.0
Our engineering team was pleasantly surprised by this piece of equipment. The cost made it easily justifiable for the project we were working on and the user-friendly design allowed us to quickly implement the testing environment and meet project deadlines. The incorporated tracking generator functionality was especially helpful. If there were any complaints, it would be with the screen capture software, which would occasionally become a little flaky. Besides this one caveat, the DSA815-TG exceeded expectations.

DSA815 - I am blown away with the performance
5.0
I am extremely impressed with this spectrum analyzer. Excellent price and quick shipping from vendor. I am not sure that you would find similar from other vendors for less than $10K. I am used to using spectrum analyzers from the 80s and 90s. Difference between night and day. I inputted a -125 dbm carrier into the unit and could easily see the signal on the screen. The one-button screen capture option is wonderful.

Best Spectrum Analyzer in the price range.
5.0
I am an RF Engineer with 20 years experience and have been comparing Spectrum analyzer for my home workbench. I am amazed at the performance this device has in its price range. Price/features one would not have found just a couple of years ago.
Very satisfied with my purchase.
