The Fluke 88V is the most powerful automotive multimeter ever offered by Fluke and has measurement functions, troubleshooting features, and accuracy levels needed to solve problems on conventional and hybrid vehicles. In addition to standard multimeter features such as the ability to measure voltage, current, continuity, and resistance, the 88V can perform:

• Pulse width (with millisecond resolution for troubleshooting fuel injectors)
• Duty cycle
• Min/Max/Average recording
• Diode tests

The 88V meter can take care of many automotive needs, getting into more of the digital multimeters measurement capabilities - it can measure voltage up to 1000 V AC and DC, current up to 10 A, 20 A for up to 30 seconds, frequency to 200 kHz and % duty cycle. Add those features to RPM measurements with optional inductive pickup and millisecond pulse width measurements for fuel injectors to name a few. The 88V comes packed with the functions you need:

RPM can be measured in either the dc volts or ac volts function. In dc volts, the measurement is dc-coupled, while in the ac volts position, it is ac coupled. If RPM readings appear noisy, you should use the function setting that provides the most stable reading.

Two RPM functions are available:

• RPM (2) is used for conventional 4-cycle engines.
• RPM (1) is used for 2-cycle engines or waste spark DIS 4-cycle engines (1 count/revolution)

The Meter comes with an inductive pickup. The inductive pickup takes the magnetic field generated by the current in the spark plug wire and converts it to a pulse that triggers the Meter's RPM measurement. The Meter can also read RPM directly from appropriate signals (like the camshaft position sensor or tach signals) using test leads rather than the inductive pickup.

1. Turn engine off

2. Connect inductive pickup to meter

3. Select AC or DC voltage

4. For 4-cycle engines that fire once every other revolution, select RPM (2). For systems that fire every revolution (2-cycle engines), and for DIS waste spark systems, select RPM (1)

5. Clamp the Inductive Pickup to a plug wire near the spark plug

6. Turn engine on. Read RPM on the display. Turn the engine off before removing Pickup
