If we didn't have these meters, then we would be able to do ours job here. We utilize pretty much all aspects of what the meter can do. This is the perfect meter when you work in power.

Fluke 289 a few issues off the line
3.0
I'm a loyal Fluke user since the 1980s. Even though it's a very mature instrument, the 289 hit all of my requirements. The meter I received had some annoying issues and needed to be returned. TE Equipment was nothing short of outstanding in the way they handled it. Three issues were as follows: Display was crooked inside the meter. Dust behind the display lens, and you may not believe this, the probe ends had some kind of barely conductive residue that made continuity simply intermittent at best. I had a similar problem years ago on another product and cleaned the probes with scotch-brite and they worked fine. TE took the ball and sent me a new meter without issue. A few pros: Compared to the equivalent Keysight, the 289 has very easy and intuitive feature selection. It's fast and as accurate as advertised and it's easily going to be a 30 year lifespan meter. The only small annoyance is the display is definitely not as crisp as the pictures. That said, it quickly grew on me and I love the amount of information that rivals my bench meter. In short, you will get used to it and the pros far outweigh the cons. When fast updating there is a bit of ghosting but it really doesn't matter when you really need to catch thing, the min/max statistics are perfect.

Top-notch Fluke
5.0
Third Fluke, mainly got it because of the logging function, graphic view and sensitivity which gives me near lab functionality in a portable unit. Wish Fluke would provide option to power externally as well. Since they don't, I'll have to modify mine and void the warranty.

Best price. Nice display.
5.0
The older meter was the Fluke 187 which is still in service and is a great DMM that, while it does have menu keys, it is a more intuitive 'knob' type meter with fewer advanced features. The 289 is a larger size (about an inch longer and a half inch wider) meter than the 187 and is more menu driven, soft key use. Almost all meter functions are available through the knob selector switch.
The 289 has a better display that packs more information on it while being quite readable at normal viewing ranges. The more advanced features do require menu selection through the soft keys. The recording feature is very useful once you understand the setup. Once setup, the fastest sample time is one second. It's not a digital storage 'scope but it is useful for capturing many slow transient problems on things like DC buss / supplies that misbehave. The graphical display is really nice for viewing collected data. There's even a zoom function for the graph.
I really like the display. The only downside that I've seen so far is that the contrast adjustment range leaves something to be desired. It's not a huge thing, and it's only noticeable with the back-light turned on.
This DMM is feature rich, but that comes at the expense of a steeper learning curve. You'll have to look at the manual a few times, but it is fairly quick to pick up on.

Multimeters don't get any better than this
5.0
A friend convinced me that I needed a "Big Boy's Meter" to replace my $20 hardware store special. He was right. Big difference in accuracy on resistance measurements.
The 289's data logging feature has been a surprise favorite feature for me. I've used it to for taking light level and temperature measurements over long periods of time. This capability greatly simplified a project I'm working on.
The display is very easy to look at, decent contrast, nice large digits. Plus it conveys much more information than a typical meter does.
Yes, it was a luxury splurge, but I'm very happy I did!

Like the Fluke 189 the Fluke 289 is just as fantastic - with greatly improved logging and a big graphic replay - a "cheap" recorder when checking slow moving signal-values...
It's a beautiful instrument, robust, very accurate with a great LCD display and function span. Great stuff!

Great multimeter with big price tag
4.0
I have used a lot of meters, including the earlier versions of this one (189II). This is by far the best meeter on the market for anything that you don't need an oscilloscope. 4.5 digit resolution on DC, logging and lo ohm measurements are just some of its measurement capabilities. The only reason why I didn't give it 5 stars is the price tag.

One fine meter
5.0
I run a small consulting business, and we don't have huge budgets for equipment. All of us have used various Flukes for years, usually traveling with a 117 or 179, or using a supplied 87-5 at the premise, and even a Scopemeter. Last year we decided to buy a 289 because we really needed data logging to measure drift. What a fantastic purchase.
We saved a great deal of time trying to calibrate a clock system with ovens which had phase lock drift. We could just put the leads on and walk away for a few hours, then come back later and see the logged result. This was far more helpful than just a simple mix/max/avg measurement. This meter also largely replaces the need for a separate LCR meter too because the C and R ranges are much wider than usual, and to higher tolerances than most multifunction DMMs, although it doesn't do inductance (at least not directly).
The 289 is about as tall as an 87-5, and actually slightly narrower across the front, but thicker on the sides. The case it goes in is oversized to allow for lots of leads and the manual (which you'll probably want to bring with you, at least for a while), but I'd still very much consider it a portable meter. It is very well made. They say you can drop it 3 meters onto concrete and it looks and feels like it could too. The engineers and techs at our client premises were pretty "wowed" when they saw it!
One client does calibration to NIST standards, so I gave their tech the 289 just 1 week after receiving it, just to check it out. The meter includes a calibration sheet from Fluke, so we compared its original calibration to the post calibration, and most measurements were just about identical. It was also very close to the centerline of the specified tolerances, not just pushing the limits.
If you need to make very accurate or time consuming measurements, but even if you're a serious hobbyist or small biz owner, you might want to consider the possibilities of a meter than can measure while you're doing other things. When I look back at the last 25 years, I know such a meter would have seemed expensive to me when I was younger (if such a thing existed then), but understanding its capabilities, it would have been so helpful so many times. I think if you found yourself getting this far looking into the 289, as I was a year ago, then you should seriously consider it. Over 20 years, it will pay for itself several times over.
Now if only Fluke could add built-in optical power measurements to this thing...but I guess they need something to improve for later.
