Review of Monarch 5396-0301 Pressure Logger with Track-It
software.

This device is a pressure logger with proprietary, but free,
software made by Monarch Instruments.

I received the logger in excellent condition and on time at a
good price from TEquipment.NET.

The logger is packaged in a pretty, rugged, and heavy-walled
stainless steel case. It can record pressure, temperature, or
both in real time or as an independent unit for later download.
Sampling rates range between 1 reading per two seconds to one a
day. The logger has memory for 24,000 readings.

The logger has a button and a two-color LED that permits offline
recording starts, stops, and showing its current state (logging
off or on and alarm status). This model does not have an LCD or
other display for direct reading of pressure, but it is usually
easy to tie in an analog gage to your pressure source.

I would have rated this logger 5-stars if it were not for some
difficulties I had with the Track-It software. The manual is
clearly written and easy to read, but it was written for a whole
family of loggers. In the interest of simplicity, it leaves out
some of the features of specific loggers.

Also some screens/tabs will show the same information as another,
but changing a setting on the wrong screen/tab will not
necessarily make the change you want. In addition, I could not
get the "sync time" checkbox to stay checked--I had to do it
manually every time it was needed.

One issue I have not been able to resolve is the setting of the
alarm values when using a pressure offset. It appears that the
logger reads natively in absolute pressure. To get gage
pressure, one can set a 1 atmosphere offset. This changes the
alarm setting. Changing the alarm setpoint back doesn't stick.
I needed to set a low alarm of 14.7psi gage. My workaround was
to go back to zero offset, and set the alarm at 29.4 psia. This
makes more work, because I now have to subtract 1 atm manually,
in a different program, to present the logger data plots.

There is one area in which I give high praise to Track-It
software: Protecting of your data. It warns you if a planned
action will delete the currently stored data. It is sensitive to
the fact that changing the clock time might put a glitch in your
data.

All in all, this logger is a gem. It is a rugged, stable, and
accurate instrument. I have had it for only a few weeks, but
every indication, including the manufacturer warrantee, suggests
great longevity.

This product is very useful and of the highest quality. This is our 2nd monitor that we have purchased, so that we can monitor 2 locations in parallel.
