Siglent SDS2304 Oscilloscope, Bandwidth 300MHz, 4 Channel

The highest specification oscilloscope available in Siglent's SDS2000 series, the SDS2304 is a four-channel instrument with maximum bandwidth of 300MHz. This means that up to four high frequency waveforms can be measured simultaneously, with each waveform shown on screen at the same time complete with colour coding for ease of use.

Siglent's SDS2000 series oscilloscopes all use Super Phosphor Oscilloscope (SPO) technology, giving them support for 256 intensity grading, hardware-based digital trigger system with lower trigger jitter and increased stability, memory depth up to 28Mpts and waveform capture rate up to 110000 waveforms per second. A wide range of other additional functions are included with this oscilloscope including support for a wide variety of smart trigger functions (including HDTV), serial protocol and trigger and decoding functions and an 8" full colour LCD-TFT screen.

The interface of the SDS2304 is clearly labelled and simple to use with menu controlling soft keys, analogue channel connectors, digital channel connectors, USB terminals, a vertical channel controlling area, function menu area, advanced function setting area (including serial trigger and decode, digital channel, MATH functions and waveform reference functions), horizontal controlling area, DDS generator setting key and trigger setting areas all available for adjustments.

I bought the Siglent SDS2304 in April 2015 as it included the function generator option, serial decode option and the MSO option for free. the MSO option did require the purchase of the HW pod, but the price for the pod was reasonable.

Overall, the scope seems like a good value. The basics of the scope seem pretty good. At 250Ksps with the input unconnected and set to 50 ohm impedance, the noise is reported as about 320 uVpp at 2mV/div. Noise jumps again at 200 mV/div as the first atten kicks in, and is about 24 mVpp. The last atten starts at 2V/div, and noise at that setting is reported as 240 mV. The front end of the scope is CATI 400Vpk, and at 10V/div setting, you have plenty of margin for poking around the mains side of an offline coverter.

Rise times are far below what I can measure. Triggering is rock solid. My fastest siggen goes to 120 MHz, which is less than half of the reported bandwidth, and everything looks reasonable at 120 MHz.

Fan noise is fine.

So, the basics of the scope are solid.

Siggen is a OK. It will do up to 6Vpp and 25 MHz sine. Seting freq and amp is really hard because you have to spin to the value you want. MSO is of limited use on the low-res screen. There just aren't enough pixels for serious analysis.

The UI is reasonable. It's a shame this scope doesn't have a big PC application with fast response that would let you pull everything over to the PC for better usability. My only real complaint on the UI is that the select knob will present you with a list of say, 5 options, and then you need to turn the know to pick one of 5 options. The knob has no detents and it's very easy to overshoot and wrap around in the list. Plus, the knob has a very cheap feeling to it. All of the front panel knobs feel cheap with a fair bit of side to side play. But the rest of the build quality is fine.

I had the scope jump into French Language mode once. Not sure how that happened. I turned it on, and everything was in French. Outside of that, no noted quirks in software.

Overall, these are some good specs for $2500. It could be better in some places, such as knob quality. But if you want amazing build quality, you pay the amazing $$$ for a big name scope.
