Great RF Generator

Rigol and TEquipment are a great combo! The DSG815 replaces an aging Fluke 6060B that is now beyond economical repair. The 6060B served me well for more than 10 years, but it was time to move on with a new RF Gen. Overall, I like the unit. It's accurate, with a good user UI. Like many reviewers before me, I wish its output could go below -110dBm, but an outboard 20 dB attenuator gets me where I have to go. My only nit with the unit it that with the RF output turned off, you can still detect an extremely weak signal. Don't know if this is leakage, or a design "feature", but it surprised me when I heard it. I fully expected the output to be zero with the gen output OFF. Not a showstopper, just a surprise. All and all, well satisfied with the DSG815. And always pleased by the terrific service and pricing from Equipment.

I recently purchased the DSG815 to replace my ageing (and bench-room gobbling) HP8648b. At £1709 plus tax, I wasn't expecting a brilliant performer, just something that was good enough to get by. Boy, was I surprised! It's every bit as good as the old HP, the only slight downside being the output attenuator which cannot reduce the signal beyond -110dBm. However, that's easily taken care of with an outboard 20dB pad. Close-in phase noise is about 20dB better than the HP and the unit is extremely 'RF tight', with no sign of RF radiating from the case. Harmonic output beats the published spec by around 20 dB and is generally about 5dB better than the HP across much of the spectrum. Frequency stability is very good despite the standard ref osc being a rather so-so unit, as I wasn't prepared to pay over £500 for the 'parts in a billion' Rigol option. The fan is quiet, which comes as a blessed relief after the blow-hard HP. A quick nod to Telonic of Berkshire for getting this instrument to my door overnight.

This instrument is a calibrated within spec, easy to use, and compact. My only wish is that it should go below -110 dBm for MDS receiver testing. However, the unit does the job with an external attenuators.
