Mine come included as a bundle promotion from Rigol when you buy the DS1054Z, so I can't evaluate the relation between the price and the benefits without being really subjective. I think that the cost of the bundle is a little excesive. You almost can buy a second scope for the actual price, or even add both costs and buy a more advanced oscilloscope. But if you are low on budget, you can buy now the oscilloscope and upgrade later, that's a good option. In my case the most useful options included are the 24Mpt option (MEM-DS1000Z), and the advance triggering option (AT-DS1000Z), specially Runt, Windows, Nth Edge, Delay and Time Out. They give a very good (in terms of price-features) oscilloscope a very nice upgrade. I already have two good logic analyzer, so I don't really need the serial bus features or have plans to use it (SA-DS1000Z and part of AT-DS1000Z).

This oscilloscope has measurement capabilities which go far beyond what most users will require. In my opinion it is by far the best measurement tool available in terms of bang for your buck. The 1054z quality far exceeds my other Owon DS7102 scope. I am a test and measurement technician ...yet still surprised in a pleasant way as I learn each new inbuilt measurement feature. One down side is there is only one vertical shift knob and only one channel sensitivity attenuator. This has to be shared between all 4 channels. Making it a button pushing exercise to remember and find which channel the knobs currently apply to. Overall a great machine though in terms of capability ...maybe not so user friendly at first, but as stated earlier it's a pleasant learning experience which becomes intuitive after a while. Gerry

My only complaints would be about it's ability to decode digital signals like Serial / SPI I2c etc. It works, but you need to zoom out very far in order for it to load the data and then zoom in. But perhaps there is an easier way I have yet to discover. Overall I'm incredibly happy.

Not as good as a dedicated logic analyzer, but add together the extra scope spec,etc. totally great.
I haven't used all the options yet, but the i2c analyzer saved my butt and quite a few hours of work on a recent project. The extra memory is absolutely necessary for that, and even so, it's hard to get enough info to really reverse engineer more than the simplest protocols, but it gives you a good idea of what's decodable and what's not.

The key was fairly easy to install. It would be nice if you could do it over usb, so you didn't have to tediously type with a knob.

MakeIt Labs is a community makerspace in Nashua and I wanted to get a more modern scope with 4 channels. As a volunteer space we don't have a huge budget for the Teks and Agilents I am used to with my day job. Several members recommended this one. We've had it for a few weeks and I love it so far. It's a well made and powerful Oscilloscope and I would give it 5 stars but for one thing. I have three of these Oscilloscopes and in my 40 years of involvement in electronics my past experience is... you buy an oscilloscope and use it and all its features. These oscilloscopes you buy and have so many days to register them and get a code to unlock features that is like pulling teeth. You have a software license key and go to the site with that key and the serial number.... and it tells you the serial number doesn't exist. If you don't conquer this within the time frame of days they give you, all the features you paid for are gone. I think that's worth knocking a star off!

We have 3 dual channel oscilloscopes in our engineering lab, Tektronic, Instek, and Omron. Recently there was a need to view timing of additional signals, so rather than buy we borrowed a 4 channel Tektronic TDS2014 from a nearby lab. A few days later, we received an email from “TEquipment” advertising the Rigol DS1054Z that included the bundled software key for $350, and decided to purchase. While the 2014 has greater bandwidth, the 1054 is adequate for our need, and certainly out performs the 2014 being used. The larger width display is a distinct advantage. User interface differs from the Tektronic and Instek scopes, but is intuitive. The font size in measure “All”, and cursor data windows is relatively small, but readable. As an alternative, specific measurements of interest can be displayed in larger font on the lower portion of the LCD using the left softkey selections. Displaying vertical and horizontal cursor with A/B X/Y information at the same time is another helpful feature. The DS1054Z is an amazing instrument. Looking hard to find a negative, it might have been better to use a higher luminance green for channel 4, rather than dark blue. Then again, they do have a luminance intensity knob ??.

Fantastic instrument - proved its worth in a day

My primary driver for buying this is that I will be demonstrating a prototype of a new lab instrument at a hotel 10 hours' drive away. I rely on an oscilloscope to be an extra pair of eyes. I have been using a 1974 vintage Tektronix dual channel CRT scope for a long time but did not want to lug it with me. After much research I bought the DS1140Z - I decided the higher bandwidth compared to the other models was important. The portability is great (if only it could run off batteries) and I bought the Rigol soft carry case to go with it. Having four channels is great since I have three signals I want to monitor permanently (all between 0.5 and 10kHz) and a couple of RF signals (40MHz) occasionally. For my instrument, I have a 1kHz signal that is both amplitude and frequency modulated which I demodulate. I need to see the signal in the time domain and also the frequency domain. I have written software to do this on my laptop but now I can see both at the same time on the DS1140Z because of the FFT math function. That's awesome! I can troubleshoot/monitor my instrument without having to use my laptop. I love dedicated devices. But here is where the scope loses half a star: the FFT function lacks two things: decent averaging and limited scaling. For the latter, if my input signal is weak (<50mV) I can barely get the center peak in the spectrum to show. I ought to be able to crank up the vertical range as high as I want but I can't. Setting the FFT parameters can also be quite tricky - or a case of hitting buttons randomly until I get the desired effect. So where's the other half star gone? This has to do with XY plotting. Two of my signals are a voltage and current pair. Plotting one against the other yields valuable information. In my case this relates to electrolysis. My analog scope does this fantastically. If fact, if it wasn't for that, I wouldn't have discovered a very important capability of my instrument. Attempting the same plot with the digital scope simply doesn't cut it. I cannot see the nuances and, such is the nature of a DSO, I cannot gauge the frequencies of the XY pair. At low frequencies (<20Hz), it is obvious on a CRT scope. However, I am beyond the need to view the XY plots on a regular basis now so the issue is somewhat lessened. I do have a habit of using things in uncommon ways and I expect most users of this scope will be very happy and give the full 5 stars.

These upgrades are nice to have but absolutely not essential. The extra memory depth is the better one allowing you to use up to 8 mpts when all channels are on. The rest are fine but there are better tools for the job. The decoding is a little hard to setup so using a proper logic analyzer is way easier, it'll do on a pinch though. The extra triggers can be handy but most of the time using an edge trigger on an appropriate channel will be faster and easier to setup. I got these for free and they were a great value but for any other price I'd have to think about it harder and maybe just choose whichever in particular I felt I needed.
