It can be used in standard mode when coatings are not present and it will behave as model UTG-2800. If no coating applications will be encountered then consider UTG-2800 as a lower cost alternative."

How does the Phase II UTG-2900 measure thru coatings?
The UTG-2900 has a special mode that is enabled thru the keypad when coatings are present. Once enabled, the thickness measurement times the interval between two successive back wall echoes that represent successive round trips of the sound wave through the test material. In situations involving painted metal, these multiple back wall echoes occur only within the metal, not in the coating, so the interval between any pair of them (back wall echo 1 to 2, back wall echo 2 to 3, etc.) represents only the metal thickness, and the coating thickness is cancelled out. Downside: Requires multiple back wall echoes, which may not exist in very thin or severely corroded metals. Range is 0.118 inch to 3.5 inch steel with up to 35 mil coating.
