The MX-500 Series is a precision, high-power soldering system with dual switchable ports. The system utilizes SmartHeat Technology, wherein each cartridge is equipped with a self-regulating heater which 'senses' its own temperature and closely maintains its pre-set idle temperature for the life of the heater-tip. The tip temperature is determined by the inherent metallurgical properties of the heater; no external adjustment or equipment is required. The MX-500 retains switchable dual port, 40W operation while introducing numerous new features in a new housing.

The MX-500AV includes the MX-H1-AV soldering iron - this is compatible with the STTC and SMTC tip series. There are several versions in each series. • STTC ? 500 Series for temperature sensitive applications ? 600 Series for temperature sensitive applications ? 700 Series for most standard applications ? 800 Series for ceramic and high thermal demand applications • SMTC ? 500 Series for temperature sensitive applications ? 600 Series for temperature sensitive applications ? 700 Series for most standard applications ? 800 Series for ceramic and high thermal demand applications

I see there are several versions of the Metcal MX-500. How are they different?
