Hakko FX888D-23BY Soldering Iron/Station/Tips

For years I have owned and used competing brands of soldering irons. Frustrations with them include obtaining correct replacement parts and having a wide range of tips to accommodate special tasks. I decided to throw the towel in and purchase this particular Hakko bundled FX888D from TEquipment because they offered this industry standard soldering station with a batch of additional tips, it is accepted worldwide as the most popular iron, and spare parts and tips are readily available. I purchased the base with the standard FX-8801 handpiece which accepts the Hakko T18 style tips that are hollow on the back end. This base assembly also accepts the Hakko FX-8802 handpiece which has N2 capability in case I ever need that, and also accepts the FX-8805 large handpiece which is great for high heat requirements and accepts both T18 and T19 style tips (I bought this as well). With this combination, I now have soldering equipment and many tips with which I can perform any soldering job from very fine SMD components to direct chassis soldering that requires massive heat. The FX-8801 handpiece heats up much faster than competing irons. Tips are easily replaced. The base unit is programmable for specific temperature settings if desired, and also allows password control of iron settings when the unit is used at a station where multiple people use it or in multiple day shifts. I am extremely satisfied with this Hakko combination. TEquipment is also a very great distributor to work with.

I own the FX888 analog design that preceded this digital design and it's pretty much exactly the same, except with the advantage of a nice large analog turn knob dial to set the temperature. You don't need a display since the dial has number markings. A red below the dial turns off when the iron is at temperature. I much prefer this as i can change temperature in 1 sec instead of having to fidget with a pressure button that's vertical on the face of the unit which is obviously not ergonomic. Often times in many tools going digital is not an upgrade, analog is better. Analog dials are always superior to beeping press buttons with delay and timers.

I have only had the Hakko FX-888D soldering station for a few weeks but I concur with the other reviews: the unit heats up very quickly, the temperature recovery time is short, it appears to be well built, the iron is nice and light and comfortable and is easy to maneuver, and my soldering experience has been great so far. I definitely should have purchased this soldering station a lot sooner. One thing about the preset temperatures, before you can access them you need to change the temperature setting mode selection to preset mode (1) and verify that the number of presets is set to 5P in the parameter settings (see the Setting mode selection section of the manual).

Since involving myself in Radio Control electric planes, all my soldering jobs were done by my Local Hobby Shop. They stopped doing that and I was left without a solution. My requirements involved components with a wire size from 10-14AWG for large batteries and barrel connectors that range from 3.0-4.0mm diameters of gold-plated material. Too expensive to screw up! Especially when some plugs are encased in a silicone housing. Apply excessive heat and they will melt to the point where they become distorted and not safe to use. The LHS uses the Hakko 951 which they use on a near daily basis. A step down from that is the FX888D-23BY. After 2 months of usage, it has turned out to be a great choice. It is easy to use and amazingly effective. It makes my soldering jobs look like I am a pro. No more wasted connectors, and no more frustration. I am totally satisfied with TEquipment's price for this great little machine which is a complete soldering station for my needs. It didn't take me long to figure out how to get it going. Of course, a few YT videos, the right solder wire, and flux made my success easier to arrive at. I recommend this station to any one with similar needs as mine.

For many decades, I have been soldering various small RC electronic projects involving 20-24AWG wire. For the heavier wire gauges like 10-14 AWG, I would pay the local hobby shop (LSH) to attach connectors. Why? The small irons simply cannot handle the job effectively. The LHS did a great job but I never stopped to ask what they used. I finally did ask and they showed me they trust the Hakko FX-951 as their money maker. Base on my needs, I chose the FX-888D which has a huge assortment of tips that insure excellent results for an amateur. Especially when heavy gauge wire and 3-4mm connectors are involved. They suggested I get a broad soldering tip like the T18-D32 to handle those bigger wire gauges. Thanks to this broad tip, the rigors of airplane aerobatics and the daily coupling and decoupling of connectors like the EC5, EC3, XT90 has not shown evidence of soldering failures. This iron can definitely put out and maintain some heat, build quality feels excellent, but unless you solder at a fixed temperature, changing the temperature will be quite frustrating. Only after calling Hakko support have I got it working properly, they are very helpful and quite familiar with this product and how to correct the settings (I wonder why). Despite how well the iron works, having to memorize or look up how to use a SOLDERING IRON is insane. I would have never guessed it possible to over engineer a soldering iron.

A good "standard purchase" iron, this one has been serving me well for quite a while, as well as a great many others. My only complaint is the user interface and how easy miscalibration is, which caused me to erroneously set the calibration temperature versus the set point temperature on more than one occasion. That in turn caused me to buy the Hakko FG100-2 tip thermometer to recalibrate the station, which is more than double the cost of the station itself! (But worth it, in any case.) If I had to do it again though I would probably buy the Pace ADS200; not because there is anything wrong with the Hakko station, which is really pretty good, but just because the Pace is that much better without being unreasonably priced like some of the JBC/Metcal equipment.

A great upgrade to my dying Weller WES50. The temperature read-out is helpful - especially when soldering larger parts which drain heat. It's a bit more compact than my well-used, WES 50, and work space on the bench top is always at a premium. I initially purchased the WES51 (the WES 50's replacement), but the blinking LED status was confusing and when the Weller rep said the behavior was normal, I returned it. An LED that's off when temperature is reached is an absurd convention, IMHO. Temperature setting controls are a bit non-intuitive (with only two buttons), but I'm sure this will become second-nature after a bit of use. Initially, I can't figure out how to get the 5 presets to work (when following the instructions) but direct setting of the temperature is easy and I tend to only adjust temperature by the job (i.e. a work session on a circuit board vs. a hard-wiring job). Usually, this involves a tip change as well. The iron holder is compact, although I wish it had storage "holes" for alternate tips.

Up to this purchase I had bought about 6 different unregulated irons. Weller, Goot, etc. I had succeeded in assembling several projects, such as an x0xB0x, but had also failed at a lot of assembling. For years I had blamed myself, thinking I was missing some key point of technique. I watched videos, used extra flux, roughed terminals up that I was soldering. I tried a lot of things. Eventually I gave up and had partners and employees do all my soldering between their other responsibilities (seriously). Recently I have needed to do a lot of assembly, including parts with different thermal conductivity and different mass (like soldering to chassis and big ground planes, pots, and still small parts). So, I needed a solution to my soldering situation. After reading reviews I bought this and some Kester 63/37. Now, soldering is easy. I'm talking like, had I used this system for the last 20 years, I would never have been convinced there was anything to soldering. One star off because I don't like the UI. It's fiddly if you want to change temperature. I would prefer a plain old knob. Currently, I'm set for Kester 44. But if I ever have to change it, I'm sure I'll need to RTFM. Anyways, this thing works, and it works exactly as I would have expected a soldering iron to work if I had never known better. It's not a Tesla or a Cadillac, but it's definitely going to do the job, do it reliably, and do it well. I would recommend this purchase unless you're going to be soldering a lot of SMT -- then you'd need to consider spending another hundred or two hundred bucks and getting something more suited to the task. For everything else, this guy does just fine.

Great fast shipping from TEquipment. Although I don't do much soldering I purchased this to assist in the construction of a model railroad. It replaces an old pencil style iron that was painful to use. This unit heats up fast and the station (something I never had) is very useful. My only complaint is the user interface. I had to go on line and look at the video to figure out how to put it in the Temperature preset mode. It came set up so it would turn on to 750 degrees F and you adjusted the temp from there. the instructions recommend that you clean/tin the tip at 482 degrees F. I adjusted the preset 5 temp from what it came with to 482 degrees thinking it will be easier to remember. Left the other presets as they were since most of my work is pretty basic. From a novice this unit is probably more than I needed , but I enjoy working with good tools.

This is the first temperature controlled iron I've used. Compared to the popular 'power' controlled iron I was using: this is twice as expensive and infinitely better! Heats up in less than a minute, with temperature read-out. The default 750 deg F quickly does joint after joint without waiting for the temperature to rebound. When you set it aside hot for a while, there is with very little oxidation on the tip - i.e. it does not overheat when idle. Only suggestion I can make, besides GET IT, is to also get the 1.2 mm tip for through-hole circuit boards.

I got this with the 4 extra tip package. The extra tips should be good for all package sizes from 0603 to medium size thermal pads. Everything works as it should. My only complaint is the incomplete user guide. The guide doesn't explain how to change the station to the preset mode which toggles the operating temperature between 2 to 5 preset temps. This mode is a must and changing to the mode is unintuive. Changing the temp on the digital version of the 888 takes a few too many button presses is the normal mode. Once I got the online manual it took a few minutes to set my temp presets and now is running as I need it. The setup is a one-time thing and automaticly saves all last settings and presets on startup. Best value I found. Small, cheap and quality.

The Hakko FX888D is a great digital soldering iron. The display is great, the digital display is much better than the old analog version. The temperature control is accurate and fast. There is very little down time when changing temperatures either up or down and when starting up the iron.

The preset temperature function is somewhat confusing to operate. Also, the iron could use a LED ON/OFF indicator. This can be a safety concern because it is very easy to leave the iron on overnight if the display is concealed.

Overall, this is the best quality iron for this price range. It is definitely versatile with multiple different tips available for multiple applications. The build quality is strong and durable, yet lightweight. Iron is comfortable for long hours of soldering at a time, should not hurt your fingers.

For the price I dont think you can go wrong, in terms of getting a iron thats reliable and that you will be able to buy parts for in the future.

That being said I think I still prefer my chinese Aoyue branded iron, as it has a much higher thermal capacity, I have done a lot of soldering with this Hakko over the past month, and any large joint or high thermal mass part requires really cranking the irons temperature, or it takes a long time to wet the joint.

Contrasting with my cheap and old Aoyue, which I have checked it does hold temperature reasonably accurately, not as well as the Hakko, but it is able to wet very large joints with ease.

The cable for the iron is very nice on this unit, and the small footprint is great for a small bench. I think this unit will grow on me once I get more practice with it and get used to it, and for the price you would be hard pressed to beat the build quality.

I have been using a foreign clone of the older Hakko for a few years now and it did a good job for me. I found that it couldn't keep up with me on it's recovery and I had difficulty with some of the clone tips. I ordered the Hakko FX-888D and immediately noticed the difference. It gets up to temperature quickly and recovers well. The presets let me move up and down quickly if I need.

I have been using genuine Hakko tips with it. They tin up beautifully and are easy to keep clean.

This is a fantastic, basic digital-controlled soldering station that simply works well. Temps seem very stable, and the 30 second warmup time makes it completely feasible to use it stop-and-go instead of always on. After determining I wanted this model, and searching around for prices, Tequipment.net had the best price for an authentic Hakko machine. Sure, there were slightly cheaper versions available from direct-from-China vendors, but many of those are undoubtedly clones or copies, and not authentic Hakko originals. Furthermore, they would also take 3-4 weeks to arrive whereas I got mine in just a few days by free UPS Ground from Tequipment.net (I added a few spare tips to break the $100 free shipping. This is a fantastic piece of kit. I've been using one hakko iron or another for quite awhile. They have always been great performers and this FX888D is no different. The iron heats up amazingly fast and keeps it's temperature pretty well. The iron and associated cable are quite light weight which makes soldering with this a breeze.

I however had to knock a star off my rating because the front panel controls are not at once intuitive. In fact if you jump right in and start mashing buttons you can easily mess up the temperature calibration settings. That would be fine, except that Hakko hasn't included the reset instructions in the manual you receive.

Other than that one niggle, which I only made once, this is a fantastic iron and despite that one flaw this is still one of my favorite irons. Highly recommended.

This is a high quality tip. It comes pretinned and is very heavy which helps hold the heat. I have been using it for a couple of weeks and tin it each time I am done soldering and it is like new. I run my iron at 600deg F and have very little oxidation and no pitting on the tip yet. Way better than most tips you get on the market. Buy genuine Hakko tips, they might cost a bit more but should last longer.

The item arrived within three days and was packaged very well. This is more of a testament to Tequipment than Hakko, but is still important as they are who you deal with.
I now have the "clown station", as my kids call it on my bench and set up for soldering wiring harnesses and some circuit boards.
Small footprint, quality burn-proof cord, balanced iron, and rapid heat up make it great for most of what your typical home or small business tech could want. It heats up amazingly fast and keeps a fairly constant temperature. I use the 2.4mm chisel tip set at 600deg F with 63/37 solder and it recovers just fine.
Download the longer instructions and look at YouTube videos on some of the features as the included manual is not real intuitive.
The tips are high quality, but I cannot comment on the longevity of the tips or iron as I have only had it for a couple of weeks.
My experience is with a Radio Shack unit and a Weller unit. The RS was ok but like using a butter knife when a scalpel should have been used. The Weller was great but gave it up after 12 years
I would recommend this unit. If you use it day in and day out, other features on higher end units might be required. However, for most of us, this is a great fit.

As others have pointed out, this soldering station looks like a kids toy. The build quality is excellent and it works great. Heats up fast. With a wider tip this iron can put a lot of heat into a component, even a component with a good connection to a power plane. I used a Weller WTCPT for many years, and this is a much higher quality station. The base/holder appears to be solid metal with a ceramic or powercoat finish. Very nice heavy feel to it.

It comes with a 1/16" tip which is good for soldering wires and some large component pins. I'd recommend spending another few dollars and get a very fine point tip for soldering fine pitch stuff. And get another wide tip for dealing with those power planes.

The 888D is as good as the high end Metcal units I use at work. Very impressed with station at this price point.

Beware of Chinese knock-offs sold on auction sites. Part of what makes the authentic Hakko parts great is the quality of each component. It's built to last. Though this looks like it could be a fisher price "my first soldering station", the build is actually very impressive! The stand that looks plastic is actually metal with ceramic paint. Quite durable and heavy enough that it will not get knocked over. Overall, the 888D is an extremely reliable system that increases productivity.

I started out by doing intensive research. I looked at stations that would meet my present and future needs; however the price of the stations were way beyond my budget. So after careful consideration, I choose the Hakko FX88D-23BY, it has met all my expectations. Rapid heating to my selected heat ranger, plenty wattage for the work I do (repairing vintage tube amps and guitars). Very sturdy base, love the presets for quick changing of heat range. I had it now for about a year and no regrets!

How does this unit heat up so fast? Amazing! I have been using an old Weller station for many years: I replaced the thermal switch in my iron a couple years ago, but it started acting up recently. I was in a bit of a rush this time, so rather than attempt another repair I decided to try a new station. The Hakko FX888D was within my budget and had decent reviews except from those who had difficulty with temp setting, etc. While the blue/yellow coloring is not my favorite, I am very impressed with the iron/station operation. I ordered it with several different tips although I have not tried them all yet. While I somewhat miss the "click-click" of my old weller operating, I sure enjoy the performance of this station.

Cord is made of supple, heatproof silicone and is about 4' long, which can get a little unmanageable on the workstation. Tips are high-quality and easily available. The two-button interface is a little tough to get used to, but you'll rarely need to use it once it's configured.

This is a quality soldering iron with a very solid construction and a nice exterior design (even if it looks a bit like a toy). It heats up very quickly. I personally would have enjoyed the old model, which featured a knob to regulate the temperature (this is why I give it 4/5 stars). Nevertheless, the two button system isn't too cumbersome, and the temperature display is nice and bright. The iron stand is sturdy. Having both a sponge and the steel wool is quite convenient. For the price, I'm very pleased with it overall.
