I struggled with solder wick on certain repairs. So I got some no-name desolder iron from that site named after a river. That one made bad smells when plugged in and did not do a clean job. So I bit the bullet and got the FR301. Wish I bought it years ago. This makes desoldering a fun activity. Not an emotional rollercoaster as with prior methods. It makes repairs mcu faster since I don't spend 15 minutes swearing at my tools and myself afterwards. Only downside is that there is not a light visible from the back end to let you know the status of the device. There is an LED but its on the front bottom, pointing away from you. Also the little metal thing to rest the iron on is a joke.

Unit died 3 months later, after extremely light use and proper maintenance. I would have to send it from CR to US for fixing. No further help provided Had to replace the main PCB not available in HakkoUSA and just to be sure a new heating element from a 3rd party. The good thing is you can find parts, (hakko USA item is backordered.) Having used the copper desolder approach and suction approach, this thing is so so much faster, easier and better to use. I do say get a few different sized tips to cover your bases on what you would desolder.. but it really works well. Most of the time.. one suck per solder joint, and the component comes off.

It is possible to remove solder with a manual de-soldering pump and solder wick, but there is nothing like the speed and ease of the Hakko FR-301 Desoldering Tool. The only downside is the cost. After looking at some cheaper knock-offs of the Hakko product, I decided the money was well-spent on the Hakko. Once you use this tool, you'll never go back to a manual pump.

I hated having to desolder something with a solder sucker (I think I was the sucker...) and/or desoldering braid. Using this thing is so easy. Heat it up, put it over the pin and when the solder melts pull the trigger. My Scottish heritage made me have doubts about the value for dollar. Boy was it wrong. This thing is worth every penny. I spent more than 30 minutes removing one of 3 pots on aboard with a "good" solder sucker and braid. So I gave up and put that board aside. I then ordered this and to try it out for giggles more than anything, I took this desoldering gun to the other two. I was done in a couple minutes - cleaner, faster, no damage and without headache.

The reviews were good on this desoldering tool so I expected it to work, but it surpassed my expectations. It makes desoldering fun instead of frustrating. It works just like you would expect. The tip works like a soldering iron with a hole in the middle - you hold it on the pin you want to desolder until the solder melts, then pull the trigger and it sucks all the solder off instantly. This tool is a real keeper. I considered buying one of the cheap ones from another vendor, but after using the Hakko, I'm glad I paid for a real professional tool. It pays to spend a little more when something really works like it should. I highly recommend it. I bought the kit with all the tips and the stand and I'm glad I got everything so I'll have what I need.

I bought this tool to desolder some components from multi-layer PCBs where I was finding my other spring-solder suckers were not working well.. This tool is really good for that. Its almost makes it fun to do desoldering. It safely removed my micro-switches and other components from my multi-level PCBs with NO Damage. And it was fairly quick to remote these components — those I did get the occasional lead that required me to reflow solder into the eyelet, and then desolder again. But even so — it did a super job doing this. It has four heat settings. I had to used setting 4 for the multi-layer PCBs. I also removed quite a number of burned out LEDs from a single layer PCB. Setting 1 was adequate for this. This was where it was really “fun” to desolder, as it only took about two seconds per leaded to de-solder, and quite literally the LEDs DROPPED from the PCB after I desolder red them, and the resulting PCB pads remained in MINT condition. I was really impressed. I didn’t find the unit got too hot too hold, and it was lightweight, and comfortable to hold. The only thing I would suggest to people considering buying this, is to make sure you buy one of Hakko’s drill cleaning bits when you get this unit. The poker that comes with it will not always clean the desoldering tube and it might become totally clogged. However if you have the cleaning drill, it is relatively easy to clear up solder that might be blocking the tube. Over all, I would highly rate this.. I wish I had purchased this years ago. It would have made it so much easier for me!

ive been using the classic 20 dollar bulb suction de soldering iron for years. that thing was a hit and miss i would often damage traces trying to get chips off with it. after breaking a few game consoles over the years i finally took that piece of crap and tossed it and broke down to get this. this desoldering gun is night and day difference i cant recommend it enough!!! don't waste your time with the cheap alternatives! this just work 100% of the time its also much faster than the cheap methods. the time it takes me to remove a chip is cut in half and it comes off with out breaking traces and no flux required either! clean up is a breeze too! I went to trade school for electronics repair a couple decades ago. We learned to use solder wick and cheap solder suckers. I've been using those for years. I knew these desoldering irons existed but I thought the solder wick was fine (it does help that I have a nice JBC iron). Well I saw this in use on Youtube channel Mr Carlson's Lab and I decided to give it a try and WOW! I've used it to repair several items. I replaced some high current relays yesterday and I put this to power 3 out of 5 and I don't even think I needed to turn it up that much. It melted that stuff like butter. The vacuum function works really well. The only other desoldering iron I have owned in the past was a Radio Shack one many years ago that cost somewhere between $25 and $50 and that was totally useless. I can't compare this product to any other actual decent products. But for the price I doubt other brands would stack up. I do recommend getting a better stand. I don't really enjoy laying the iron on its side with the "stand" (more like tip protector) it comes with. But it does more or less work.

I just wish I had this desoldering tool years ago, it works great. I have used it on through hole circuit boards and also de-soldering hand wired old tube radio circuits. I can't believe how clean it will leave a tube socket terminal that you can then just untwist the wires.

FR-301 - excellent tool w/one easy-to-fix issue

I used my new Hakko FR-301 desoldering gun for the first time yesterday. I was very pleased with the performance of the gun. It is comfortable to use and does a really good job of cleaning out via holes, leaving through-hole component leads free to drop out. To save their tips from oxidizing and making them difficult to wet with solder, I typically turn irons off while doing other operations until I am ready to use them again. The FR-301 comes up to temperature quickly which facilitates this. The only complaint I have with the unit is that the power-on indicator light is on the wrong side of the handle. The indicator on the FR-301 is not visible when the gun is parked in its stand. It would be better to have the indicator visible from any vantage point at any angle, or at the very least somewhere on the back, like perhaps on or around the power switch itself. As it is now, you have to remove the unit from the stand and turn it around to veiw the indicator. It could be brighter too. Presently, it is rather dim and difficult to see. The FR-301 is, otherwise, an excellent tool. You may want to pass this information on to the manufacturer. Thanx, G. Knoedl

Works great on everything I have desoldered so far. Excellent heat retention/regeneration. No waiting for reheating for rapid use. The solder filter tank are easily removed for cleaning. I did also buy the nozzle kit but have only used the included 1.0mm nozzle to date. The Hakko 633-01 stand is recommended versus the little metal "stand" that comes with the unit.

I was dreading a large through-hole desoldering project (dozens of 4-legged switches to remove) because I don't get a lot of time to work on my hobby. I purchased the FR-301 after I heard that it was an improvement on the FR-300, which I was on the fence about purchasing because of some less-than-stellar reviews. This is a fabulous tool for getting a lot done in a short amount of time. A good analogy is that your manual vacuum pump and solder wick are a cordless drill and your task is to remove all the deck screws from a deck. This desoldering tool is like an impact driver. Zip, zip, zip and you're done. Highly recommended if you're more than a casual hobbyist.
