Fluke 87-5 Digital Multimeter (87-V)

Accuracy and diagnostic functions for maximum industrial productivity.

Fluke 80 Series V has replaced series 80 Series III.

The new Fluke 87V has improved measurement functions, trouble-shooting features, resolution and accuracy to solve more problems on motor drives, in plant automation, power distribution and electro-mechanical equipment.

The New 80 Series consists of the following models:

The 87V operates very similar to the classic 87, but with more problem solving power, safety, convenience and impact protection.

The new 80 series V are independently tested to comply with the 2nd edition of ANSI/ISA S82.01 and EN61010-1 CAT IV 600V/CAT III 1000V. They can withstand impulses in excess of 8,000 V and reduce risks related to surges and spikes.

Electrical safety.
All inputs are protected to Category III, 1000 V and Category IV 600 V. They can withstand impulses in excess of 8,000 V and reduce risks related to surges and spikes.

The new Fluke 87V is designed specifically to handle complex signals produced by adjustable speed motor drives. Think of the potential productivity you'll gain by taking the guesswork out of drive system troubleshooting. Measurements are correct each and every time. Unique function for accurate measurements of noisy pulse-width modulated AC voltage. Measures correctly at the ASD and at the motor terminals
Accurately measure the frequency (motor speed). Frequency measurement not affected by the ASDs carrier frequency
Measure AC current with an optional current clamp accessory
Compare readings from the 87V with the display on the ASD
Special shielding blocks high frequency, high-energy noise generated by large drive systems


Complex PWM drive signals are not a problem for the Fluke 87V	Pulse-width modulated detail of 50 Hz motor drive output voltage. 1000 V, 50 micro-second pulses can cause erratic behavior in some test equipment

This meter reading of the output voltage is with the low pass filter enabled. The reading compares well with the drive's display value.

This meter reading without the low pass filter enabled is approximately 30% higher than the actual drive output voltage. This reading utilizes the meters full 20 kHz bandwidth. Many other multimeters available today will not provide readings which compare to the drives display value.

AEMC ALS-1 2121.05 AC Line Splitters

The AC Line Splitter Model ALS-1 increases the sensitivity of clamp-on current probes and clamp-on meters. Avoiding splitting lines makes reading current easy. The Model ALS-1 provides temporary separation of conductors to facilitate measurement of current. Simply plug the Model ALS-1 into a connector for a safe measurement. Direct readings are available. Two clamp positions: X1 for direct readings; X10 for actual reading multiplied by 10. Also features voltage check function.

The best most of us can get

You can’t go wrong with a Fluke. Within the brand, you can’t go wrong with 87V, Fluke’s bestseller. It’s safe, rugged, accurate and the calibration seems to last forever. I’m using it for electronics projects. Things I like: 1. Wide AC bandwith - up to 20,000 Hz (this makes it usable for audio projects). Most other multimeters (including most other Flukes) are capped at 1000 Hz, at best. 2. “Smart” precision: 6000 counts for regular measurements, switchable to 20,000 counts, with a (loong…) push of a button, when higher precision is needed. When powered on, it defaults to 6000 counts, hiding the extra-digit that only creates confusion when not need it (which is most of the times for the most of us) – brilliant! 3. Fast. When it displays a measurement, that’s the final value. You don’t have to wait while watching changing numbers on the display, wondering if it “stabilized” or not. Gorgeous! 4. Full current range - it measures uA, mA and A (AC and DC). Most other Flukes (targeted to electricians) don’t cover all these ranges. 5. Brilliant auto-hold mode: can’t probe and watch the display in the same time? No problem. In “auto-hold” mode, focus on placing the probes where they should be, wait until you hear a beep (about a second or less), remove the probes then check the display – your measurement is there! Most other multimeters (including some cheaper Flukes) only have a useless “hold” function, which requires you to press the “hold” button while holding the probes in place, to keep the value on the display. Why would you need that for?! 6. Great ergonomics – big rotary switch, with wide spaces between positions, clearly labeled, with markings easy to read (and hard to confuse). You only realize how important this is when you try to use a “feature rich” competitor with lots of not-really-necessary stops on the rotary dial and good looking curved surfaces that make you move your head trying to avoid odd reflections that prevent you from reading the dial. The digits on the display are easy to read, have a good height/width proportion and spacing. 7. Great resell value. The only reason I bought a new Fluke 87V from Tequipment is that it doesn’t sell for that much more than a 10 year old one. Based on the number of second hand units on the market, they seem to work forever. Things I don’t like: probes. I have never been a fan of TL75, the standard (i.e. cheapest) Fluke probes. They are a bit rigid and the tips are not that sharp (for electronics work). Other than that, OK – they do the job. Sure, there are other meters better for particular jobs (including other Flukes). If you need one of those, you already know it. If you are just wondering which Fluke meter you should buy, this is the one. It does it all. Also, if you wonder whether you really need a Fluke (yes, they are pricey for the features they offer) – well, you can definitely buy cheaper from other brands (like I did before, too). Just keep in mind that you might get a less accurate one (with possibly more useless digits on the display) that might get even worse in time (drift…) and one day will either simply stop working or (worse) display wrong measurements (get two of them, to check them periodically against each other). Be careful when using them with high voltages. Or just buy this Fluke, like I did.

"The" Meter

Quality: Zippers are nice feeling and smooth. Cloth is not too thin and feels well stitched. The padding was not as thick as I expected, so if this was in a tough environment (tossed in the van or truck toolbox, carried around the shop all day, etc), I would be a little cautious about the meter being dropped or banged around by tools. Features: The inside pocket is helpful; I used it to store the manual and calibration card for my equipment. The case is pretty large (oversized for my meter) but I would not have any issue fitting a typical meter and a few accessories inside without having to smash everything in there. Overall a decent quality case that can hold a wide array of meters plus accessories.

The Fluke 97 is an amazing instrument, not only for doing things most folks know about, but for doing well some things few are aware of. One is the nS feature. In the ohms setting, press RANGE until you see the conductance units nS. Normally the resolution is 0.01nS, which corresponds to 10^11 ohms, but press the Hi Res button to get 0.001nS, Rmax 10^12 ohms. Awesome! Another capability is measuring low currents.On the mV range, with Hi Res, the meter resolution is 0.01mV or 10uV. The Fluke 87 has infinite input impedance on this range, so add an external current-sensing resistor, like 1.00 meg-ohm. On the 200mV range full scale ill be 0.2uA and the resolution will be 10pA.. Try 10M for 1pA sensitivity, who knew this instrument could do that!?

I am glad I spent the extra money to get the 87-V. Fluke has a great warranty and the durability to withstand abuse in the field. I will be be working in the aviation industry, and currently maintain my own aircraft. The fast and sensitive continuity test is an essential feature for trouble shooting. It does everything a good meter should and does it accurately and reliably. I have also been putting together electronic kits and it has been great for checking values, etc.. The increased resolution comes in handy as well. The only odd thing is the leads that are supplied with the meter do not fit the slots in the rubber case...go figure? Tequipment.net has been great to do business with.

TEquipment got the Fluke 87v from order to my hands within seven business days, which I appreciated. The 87v arrived packed securely in a mailer box. The Fluke box itself was not damaged during delivery. On first handling I immediately noticed how heavy-built the 87v felt compared to my Extech EX410 multimeter. The 87v was a brand-new item and not a repackaged return item. Initial testing of AC voltage from my home outlets returned almost instantaneous readings from the auto-ranging feature. The voltage readings displayed a more accurate value than what my EX410 returned. The second test I did was check how responsive the audible beep was when I tapped the test leads quickly with the 87v on Continuity setting. I heard a beep even when tapped and released the leads as quickly as I could. I told myself that the 87v is the last multimeter that I'll buy in a long time. Honestly though, that's why they're called "multi" meters, right? Because we can't help but own multiples of them. Great job TEquipment for delivery and Fluke for the 87v.

I just received my very own fluke 87-5 dmm. I have been using a 87-5 for work over the past 20 years. Here is why I highly recommend this meter. I work on oil & gas rigs and platforms offshore in the Gulf of Mexico. The fluke is subjected to sun, heat, wind, rain, cold, fog, salt water air and being banged around while being transported by boat and helicopters. The meter has never failed me other than the battery or me measuring a 12 volt battery with lead still in amp jack. I use this meter to measure amp draw on fog horns which range from 1A to sometimes over 10A. I also use the min/max feature for capturing peak voltage at 12v flashers for nav-aid lanterns. It's also used for measuring solar panel output (dc volts and current). To sum this up...if your on the fence trying to decide and you have the funds available then just do yourself a huge favor and BUY a fluke 87-5. You won't regret it...I promise. Tequipment is awesome company to deal with and I will do business with them in the future.

There is enough room to have the multimeter and leads safe, and a small inner pouch to have the use manual and other papers safe from falling out and getting bent. It zips up with a two zipper end system so there is no issue with which way to go when closing. It has a loop at the top so I can hang it anywhere. Having had a career in EE I already knew this would be a very good DMM before I made the purchase. So far so good. I've not been disappointed.

The "What's In The Box" should be updated. Apparently Fluke no longer includes the CD with the documentation on it. Instead the docs should be downloaded from Fluke's Website.

The DMM arrived intact but the outer shipping box and internal packing seemed a bit marginal. The outer box was beginning to come apart and the contents could rattle around some (minus one star).

All's well that ends well and so I'm happy overall and would use TEquipment again.

It's fluke so what can I say. The build quality is perfect. The unit is bigger than I thought but definitely a very well constructed and useful unit.

The two reasons for not giving 5 stars is because first, it has a knob for setup to 0v and it's really sensitive. You have to check it to be in zero every other minute because you may loose calibration just by accidentally touching the knob. I think is just matter of getting used to it. And second, the measurement at the multimeter is in volts, therefore, if you have a connected meter then your reports are going to be in mV. 1mV equals to 1A and it's really straight forward but I would like it to have the measurements in my meter in amps.

I definitely recommend this product if your multimeter is low current or if you want to measure high currents.

If these two perks with the knob and the measurements in mV are not an issue at all for you then it's a definitely 5 star accessory for your scope.

The fabric on the inside of this case is pretty cheap and will easily fray due to the test of time.

Foam padding could have been better as well, it'll do the job only up to a certain point. Say you had your meter on your bench, and you bumped it onto your hardwood, concrete, or tile floor, it would probably be okay. But if you were, say an electrician, and you dropped this from a ladder onto the hard floor, your meter will probably be damaged in some way or form.

Overall, it's a cheaply made case that sells for more than what it is and it has a, "Made in China," tag on the inside to prove it.

This product is built to last decades!

I especially like the continuity range which responds instantly and has a latching circuit so very momentary contact still produces a prolonged beep.

The one thing i dislike is the fact that it defaults to AC current. 95% of the time i want DC current and have to switch from AC to DC every time.

Looks to be a good constructed bag to keep a multimeter and some accessories together and portable. Material seems durable, but the padding seems thin and soft. The padding would still help to keep the pointy, jutting parts inside from poking too much. There is a pocked inside, but is more of a divider than a pocket; probably to allow the test leads to be left plugged into the meter so that you can use the meter from the bag. Double zippers along the top for easy opening, and a loop at the top that you could thread a belt through to hang by your waist.

I dock it a star because it doesn't default to DC for current measurements, supposedly because it is an "industrial" and not an "electronics" meter. Every time you do DC amp measurement or switch amp ranges (which is pretty often) you have to remember to push a button to switch from AC to DC. Otherwise, usability is pretty much perfect.

As the title says, kind of an universal pouch. The textile job is okay (lots of left over ends of threads inside), but the quality of the nylon cloth is great. And the zip is excellent too. Recommended~

Fluke meter, no need to explain

It's a Fluke 87v, has been in the market for decades as the gold standard. The price for a new one is pretty expensive but well worth the 350 bucks for its quality and lift time warranty. The only complaint I have with the 87v is the two probes holder on the back of the meter.. Hard to clip in hard to get out. The worst part is that you wrap the cable few rounds, think you get the right length and clip the two probes in...Nope, they are a few inches longer, so you'd have some dangling cables there...

Anyway, the meter itself is what worth the 300 bucks. Highly recommended meter~

There are so many useful features on this meter: a 5 digit screen, a thermocouple temperature sensor and a very quick continuity tester. I was uncertain as to whether the meter would come with a temperature probe because it's not listed in the "what comes in the box" portion of the product info. Fluke makes some of the best professional multimeters available and the 87-V is one of their best. It has a great combination of features, toughness and reliability. Its true Fluke meters are also among the most expensive but to quote the old adage "You get what you pay for. With Fluke you'll be using their meters long after other cheaper brands have failed.

This unit also very easy to use. While Fluke has come out with newer editions of the 87, fortunately they have not messed with the original winning design.

Great DMM, but where is the manual?

The DMM was exactly as I expected,a first class product, but there was no manual included! I don't understand why they will not include a compact manual to keep with the instrument. When I called Fluke they were happy to print out the online version and send it to me, but I wanted a compact manual to keep in the case with the instrument. I understand that this product is used world wide and the manual must be printed in many languages, but I think that a top of the line product like Fluke should come with a compact,operator's manual in the language that I speak, like the cheapest Chinese versions do!
