Foam Lined Case

I bought one for my FLIR IR thermometer and got an extra one for my Fluke hand held and clamp meter. Easy to pull the foam squares out to fit pretty much any shape. The foam squares are ~1/2 square, but run the full depth. But, it is easy to cut to the depth you want. I had to double back tape the top foam liner because it always fell out when you opened the box. But not a big deal. A whole lot better than letting my instruments bang around in a drawer or tool box.

I like this meter a lot. It performs nicely and is of high quality. The only knock as far as I'm concerned is the lousy display and backlight. If you tilt the display down, it washes out badly. the backlight is absurdly anemic, considering the cheap Chinese flukes have better backlighs

I did not want to spend $350.00 for a 87-V even though that is a great meter. The 179 does every thing I need for hobby work. The yellow cover that is on the 87 meter is not on the 179. Just made to look like one.

I bought the 179 about three years ago for mainly working on vintage Fender and Marshall guitar amplifiers. It is super accurate and sensitive and the best model for what I do.True RMS and what I like the most is the milliamps setting. I use this to bias(balance) the power tubes which I do with the amp on! If you make a mistake and touch ground the fuse will save your meter.Fuses are pricey but they do their job. I can also check DC volts AC volts,continuity and resistance which is great for checking speakers and circuits. Perfect for the home hobbyist and techs.No problems and Tequipment had the best price and service.A

THIS METER IS VERY VERSITILE FOR THE ELECTRICAL FIELD. I WOULD SUGGEST GETTING THE MAGNET HOLDER FOR THE BACK OF THE METER SO YOU CAN HANG IT WHILE USING IT. THE RANGE BUTTON ON THE MACHINE ALLOWS YOU TO GET PERCISE READINGS.

I'm a beginner and I asked the techs at this store if this is good for my application.Turns out it wasn't what I was looking for. What I needed was the 87-5 which is more suited for testing category I electronics (computers/facsimile machines and the like) mili Amp/ micro Amp and Voltages. I would also like to check auto circuits, which the 87-5 is suited it for, all of which depends which test lead kits you get for the purpose, I purchased the Fluke TLK289 industrial test lead kit, which I also had a problem with, the probes and clips were to big. I don't know why they don't label these products by safety category (I,II,III,IV) I would of better understood what I needed. So I had to send every thing back. Fluke Corp wasn't much help either. I give it one star cause of tech support and I didn't use it, to be able to give it a fare rating.
I wouldn't recommend this for category I applications.

Accurate, rugged meter

This meter is an invaluable tool that I have used extensively in my hobbies. Though it may be a pricey meter for a hobbyist, it is definitely extremely useful, and accurate, at least insofar as I can tell.

I have dropped it several times, and it still works just fine- the rubberized body is really quite comfortable and protects it pretty well, I suppose.

Really, though, the competition is between this meter and the Fluke 77- while I don't regret spending the extra money to get this model instead of the 77, as I appreciate knowing it's a bit more accurate and true-RMS- if you don't need either of these features (granted there are a couple other differences, like the capacitance reading ranges), you might do well to get the 77, if you're just a hobbyist like me.\

Either way, I would HIGHLY recommend this meter, if you've got the money.

Great for sticking in the back of a PC and getting temp readings easily and quickly. I bought a set of alligator clips to make this easier to read hard to reach spots. Works great.
