Comparison Summary

The Fluke 117 and Fluke 77-4 (also written as 77-IV) are both True-RMS Multimeters with large 3-1/2 digit / 6,000 count displays featuring bright backlights. Each meter is capable of measuring resistance, continuity, capacitance, and frequency, although neither meter can measure temperature. The 77-4 can measure AC/DC volts and current up to 1000V and 10A - while the 117 can also measure AC and DC, it measures up to 600V and 20A.

The 77-4 features better basic DC measurement accuracy than the 117 at 0.3% - the 117 is accurate to 0.5%. Both meters feature diode test capability, a bar graph function, min/max recording, and display hold functions.

The 77-4 is safety rated to both CAT III 1000V and CAT IV 600V while the 117 is only rated to CAT III 600V. That said, the 117 features an ingress protection rating of IP42 against dust and water ingress while the 77-4 has no ingress protection rating. The warranty on the 117 is also only 3 years while the 77-4 has a lifetime warranty.

The Fluke 117 does include some special features which are not found on the 77-4. These include VoltAlert^™ non-contact voltage detection and LoZ ghost voltage detection.
