5.0
This tool simply gets the job done quickly and easily. Maintenance is a piece of cake. It's difficult to imagine life without this tool. Many of my friends continue to use their little manual vacuum suckers and fluxed braid, but after seeing this at work for a minute or two they put it on their list of tools to lust after. Assuming the new FR-301 matches this unit the $50 reduction in price would make it a no-brainer for somebody who doesn't want to waste their life unsoldering.

A life saver for repairs...
5.0
This Hakko FR300 has surpassed my expectations. A few minutes after opening it for the first time, I had pulled multiple 8 pin relays from a board I was working on.
The selection of tips is important, in my opinion. Having a tip that is wide enough for your pins (>1mm for older things) is a must have.

Works great! Fast, fast, fast! Easy to clean and really good suction. Took components off of an old DSL modem and other old boards, didn't take long at all. So much better than a suction desoldering tube. Makes desoldering through-hole components so easy. I'll never go back to solder wick, squeeze bulb suction, etc. This thing has already paid for itself in reclaimed parts and time saved.

What did I ever do without this tool?
5.0
I've been repairing audio related electronics for 10 years, and up until recently had always gotten by with the solder wick and manual solder vacuum pump for my desoldering needs. With a couple of big recapping jobs on the horizon I ordered the Hakko FR-300, and HOLY COW am I glad I did. This tool is an absolute must for any high volume desoldering work. It saves time AND effort, and I haven't lifted a trace since I started using it. Cleaning is super easy, the included cleaning tools get the job done quickly. Do yourself a favor and get the full kit with the stand and extra tips. Worth it!

What can I say with a little practice and learn curve this one has it for portable use
I would recommend getting the larger tip and another size to your own needs had to remove some transformers and heat sinks from double side threw holes other components was a snap. A little trick with heat sinked transistors on center lead I found putting a little dab of flux on the side of a board at the contact point wait for a little cloud of vapor then push the switch made it faster and cleaned nicely with out having any retry's.

If you do ANY rework at all, you need this tool. Even at home. I've used hollow-tip solder suckers in work environments but never figured it was worth having one at home. But I finally got tired of poor performance from the old manual spring-based units and took the chance on this one. WOW... I wish I could recover all the time (and destroyed PCB's!) that I wasted by not buying this sooner.
Seriously - spend the money. You'll thank me.

Awesome. Goodbye, spring-loaded solder sucker!
5.0
These seem expensive for what they do. I've used them in the past and sure, they're great, but hey - why not just get by with a $10 spring loaded solder sucker?
Answer: Because this unit SUCKS! And that's a GOOD thing! There is no substitute for clearing PCB through-holes; you can flail around with the old spring suckers and waste lots of time and risk damaging the board, or you can grab one of these units and do a far better job in far less time.
Seriously... if you do much rework at all, stop thinking about it and just spend the money. It will be worth it the very first time you use it.

Great desoldering tool
5.0
I've used an older 808, and the FR300 is definitely better. It's lighter, has better balance, and is easier to operate overall. The 300 has an on-off switch and a temperature control that is simple to use, making it a bit nicer than the 808. My only complaint is that the nozzles can get clogged, not from solder, but from caked or charred flux, so make sure to use the clearing pin to remove this as you go. Still, if you keep the tip tinned and adjust the heat properly, it does an excellent job with both through hole and SMD PCBs. I do less and less through hole work, but it's still invaluable for cleaning a surface mount pad. It's far more gentle and fast than solder wick or a manual solder pump. Highly recommended if you do any rework or repair at all.

It really sucks!
5.0
Things really sucks! It sucks the old solder from a double sided circuit board, and makes replacement of failed components such an easy task that I am unsure how I lived without one. Is it expensive? Yes. Is it worth it? Absolutely! Are there other ways to remove thru hole devices? Sure, but it’s harder and there is a much higher risk of damage to the circuit board. The Hakko FR-300 heats up fast, is easy to clean, and comfortable to use. I have used the manual solder suckers, solder wick, and a Pace vacuum de-solder pencil in the past and the Hakko outshines these hands down.
The best part is how fast it heats up. I don’t have to leave it turned on unless I am doing a large amount of rework. It heats up within 20-30 seconds and just plain works.
I have even used it on antique radios where the large components and terminal lugs contain a large quantity of solder. It just takes a little extra attention to make sure the solder goes thru the heating element and into the holding tank. There is a risk of plugging it up, but it’s been easy to clean thus far. I am thinking about getting a larger tip for this use as I am using the tip that was included.
Overall I am very pleased with my purchase and of course Tequipment.net is THE place to buy from. Fast shipping and you can be sure that what you get is not a knock-off from eBay.

Highly recommended for professional or serious DIY rework - you can forget about using your hand operated solder pump after using it.

Hakko FR-300 works great so far
5.0
I've had this for about a month now, and so far I love it. Seems to suck just as well as the $900 Pace system I've got in the shop, and this is a lot more convenient to take on the road. Yeah, it's a little heavier than the Pace handpiece, but it's well balanced, and easy to hold. I haven't had it long enough to comment on durability or ease of maintenance.

A nice tool!
5.0
This is my first vacuum desoldering tool, other than a manual Soldapult, but I've used a Hakko 808 before, and the FR-300 is definitely nicer. It seems lighter and better balanced than an 808, so it's easier to position accurately on a delicate board. The vacuum trigger switch is also in a better spot, so it doesn't 'go off' accidentally quite as easily.
It has an easy to adjust power level control, as well as a power on / off switch. Unlike the 808, you can easily turn the tool off after one use, saving the nozzle from becoming excessively un-tinned / needing to be re-tinned. It powers up fairly quickly as well, so unless one's desoldering a number of connections, there's no reason why it shouldn't be powered off after each use.
I managed to clog the nozzle with one strand of exactly the wrong gauge of wire, but once I realized that I could turn the temperature up and add fresh solder/flux to the nozzle, it was easy to clear with the vacuum. Emptying the chamber is fairly pleasant too - the removed solder tends to aggregate into a nice, solid blob, and not a pile of extremely fine powdered metal, making it much easier to transfer to my hazmat jar.
Overall, it's a really nice tool, useful for rework of ancient through hole boards that used questionable adhesives, as well as modern SMD rework where it does a great job leveling a pad with minimal damage and effort. Highly recommended!

The FR-300 is much improved with a longer power cord, an on/off switch, and a temp setting that's much easier to use than the recessed trim pot on the 808. FR-300 vs. 808
5.0
The FR-300 is definitely a step up over the 808 for air suction, heat transfer and easier cleaning. Another very important improvement over the 808 is the temperature dial which isn't prone to damage like the 808's temperature trimpot.
The handle design is quite different than the 808, if you're used to it you'll need a few days to fully adjust to the FR-300; but once you do I feel it's a lot better. If you didn't like the 808's handle design in the first place then the FR-300 will feel better instantaneously.
The only strange caveat to using the FR-300 is that I always have to put flux on the cleaning rod in order for it to successfully go through the nozzle. On the plus side, it is possible to fix clogged tips on the FR-300 by putting flux inside the tip (screwing it back in), setting the heat to max, and then also coating the cleaning rod in flux. The 808's clogged tips were virtually impossible.
Definitely get the FR-300 if you want better *performance* for difficult through-hole multilayer boards or the like. The FR-300 also seems to keep its performance consistently whereas the 808 would lose suction over time.

Hakko FR-300 First Impressions
5.0
I'm very happy with the changes made to the new Hakko FR-300 compared to the older Hakko 808 desoldering gun. Standout improvements are the sleeker and smaller design and better ergonomic and relaxed fit in the hand. The handle and trigger mechanism is now designed to make prolonged use of the gun much more comfortable. The on-off switch with LED indicator and longer cord is another BIG improvement over the 808. I like the thumb wheel temperature selector with the visual reference to temperature settings, it’s way easier to adjust than the 808. Tip retainer mechanism on the FR-300 is much improved as is the solder tube and holder. While the slight increase in vacuum suction is welcome, the decrease in size of the gun made mostly possible by going to a single diaphragm pump is a big design plus. An increase in wattage should positively round off the numerous improvements to an already good product, making the FR-300 a must have on the electronics workbench.
Some small CONS: There is no protective iron cover included in the FR-300 kit as was included in the 808 kit. The protective tube that is used to protect the case from a hot iron is a poor afterthought and a next to useless. Fewer filter parts are included with the newer kit, compared with the older kit. Although Hakko put an LED on the front of the handle that lights when the heater element is on, it is difficult to see and of course the light is intermittent, lighting only when the gun is actually heating the element. It would have been nice if an additional LED be installed near the on/off switch, indicating an ON condition and in a place viewable while in a solder station holder. The LED installed in the front of the handle is not viewable in the guns normal safe storage position, which should be located in a proper holder somewhere on the workbench.
Overall: A BIG Thumbs Up for the new Hakko FR-300. While I have not had a chance to use it yet, my first impressions are, I like it!
